An exotically perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black/blue fruits, Moroccan spice, potpourri and incense. Densely packed and impressively lively on the palate, offering intense blueberry, cassis, cherry compote and floral pastille flavors that firm up steadily on the back half. The floral and spice notes carry emphatically through an impressively long, youthfully tannic finish that leaves a smoky mineral flourish behind.
Reviews:
- Wine Advocate: As usual, Chapoutier's 2018 Ermitage l'Ermite is a standout among standouts. Crushed stone, blueberries, even a touch of herb feature on the nose, while the full-bodied palate is cool and crunchy but also ripe and generous. It's rich and long, with a firm, granitic structure that should enable two-plus decades of aging. This has it all.
- Wine Spectator: Big and powerfully structured, this is loaded with toasty richness to the concentrated mineral and white fruit flavors. Buttery nuances midpalate lead to a long finish that lingers with dried savory hints.
Producer Information
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable and sizeable producers in the Rhne Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively. The family's history in the Rhne dates back to 1808, but it wasn't until 1879 that Polydor Chapoutier transitioned the family from growing grapes to making and trading wine. In 1988, Michel Chapoutier took the company reins, and a push toward quality saw the Chapoutier label begin to gain international recognition.Michel Chapoutier eschewed the use of traditional, large format chestnut foudres for aging, instead moving toward smaller oak casks with shorter aging periods. He also advocated keeping the wines unfiltered and unfined, and to work with only biodynamically or organically grown fruit across all of the vineyards.
